How To Stop Skipping Workouts (And Improve Consistency)

Uncategorized Mar 27, 2024

Everyone knows that if you want a great physique, you need to workout a lot. But what should you do when you train hard while you’re at the gym, but you go inconsistently?

Some weeks you workout 6 times, some weeks you workout 1 time. Sound like you? Keep reading.

The root of this problem is having an all-or-nothing approach to the gym (and fitness overall). What is probably happening on the good weeks is you slept well, ate well, have energy, and feel motivated.

On the bad weeks, it’s the exact opposite, so you don’t go to the gym because you know you won’t perform well.

You have to change your view of success in the gym. It doesn’t matter if you can hit PRs in the gym, what matters is that you show up ANYWAY. Consistency isn’t being perfect, consistency is taking imperfection action regardless of how you feel.

4 Steps To Easier Meal Prepping

Adopt these 2 mindset shifts:

  1. “I’ll workout for the amount of time I have free, whether that’s 60 minutes, 30 minutes, or 10 minutes…all of it is a successful day”.
  2. “I’ll train with the intensity I can manage that day, whether I can get PRs, or if I have to do a light deload workout…all of it is a successful day”.

Here is how this can look in a real life scenario with a busy schedule:

(On a "good" day)

  • Workout (option 1): 6am-7am
  • Work: 8am-5pm
  • Spend time with family/kids: 6pm-7:30pm
  • Workout (option 2): 7:45pm-8:45pm

(On a "bad" day)

  • Workout (option 1): 6am-6:30am
  • Work: 7am-7pm
  • Spend time with family/kids: 7:30pm-9pm
  • Workout (option 2): 9pm-9:15pm

As you can see, whether it's a good day or a bad day, you can still allocate time to taking care of yourself. It doesn't matter if you had to work longer than normal. You can still spend time with your family and be consistent in the gym.

It may only be for 15-30 minutes on bad days, but it adds up. If you ONLY had bad days every day of the year, and worked out for 15 minutes per day, that's still 105 minutes of exercise per week...5,460 minutes (91 hours) per year.

Who do you think will be in better shape, a person that works out for 91 hours, or a person that works out for 0 hours. That's the magic of not overthinking things and worrying about being perfect. Just get to the gym and do what you can, and do it all the time. Keep in mind, this is if you only had "bad days". Most people have more good days than bad, so your progress will be incredible once you make the mindset shift.

I PROMISE you, when you think this way, there’s no way you can fail, because everything you do is success, and that momentum builds into a better physique.
