So you've just recently started your journey into the fitness world. You have big dreams of taking your shirt off at the beach and having everyone's jaw drop in amazement at your six-pack abs, capped delts, huge arms, and V-taper.
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but having a physique like that probably isn't going to happen for you...nor does it need to happen for you. There are 4 reasons why having a great physique isn't for you:
1. It takes YEARS to build a GREAT physique.
The biggest reason having a great physique isn't for you is because it takes YEARS to build your ideal dream body. Yes...literally years to be able to have a chiseled physique that is front cover of a magazine ready.
If you don't believe me, ask anyone that has an impressive physique how many months they worked out to look the way they do. I guarantee they let out the best laugh they'll have that day at how absurd it is to assume it only takes months for a beginner to get photo shoot ready.
Now, I don't want this to discourage you from sticking with your fitness journey. However, you'll do more harm to your self-esteem than necessary if your expectations don't match your reality.
Stay consistent and keep improving every month, but if you aren't willing to dedicate YEARS to constantly working hard in the gym and in the kitchen, you probably won't reach your dream physique. It is possible to have a GOOD physique in less than a year of training though, so keep grinding.

2. You have to sacrifice social interactions.
One part of achieving a great physique than many beginners overlook is just how much of your social interactions are based around activities that are detrimental to your health and physique.
For example, every Friday and Saturday night going out to the bars for drinks. Staying up late playing video games online with friends. Frequent outings to restaurants for delicious food. Taking your kids to a fast-food restaurant and eating similar food with them. Going to the movies and getting snacks. There are so many other normal scenarios that you probably can add to this list. All of them are based on either eating in excess, creating poor quality sleep, or drinking alcohol/doing drugs.
Unfortunately, if you want a GREAT physique, you can't do any of these things for the majority of the year. To build a great physique, you have to be strict with your food intake. That means no fast-food with the kids. No going to a restaurant on a whim. You have to be dialed in 90-95% of the time.
If you want a GREAT physique, you can't go out drinking with your friends. Alcohol will add empty calories to your diet, and you can't take the chance of being hungover and missing a workout.
Do you see where I'm going with this? This is a reason why having a great physique isn't for you. Most people aren't willing to sacrifice their social life to make full pursuit of a great physique. To build a GOOD physique however, you can still have a social life while also looking good. You just need to realize that your idea of a beach body probably requires more sacrifice than you're willing to make right now.
3. You don't follow a specified workout program
Let me take a guess at what you're workout routine is:
Monday- Chest
Tuesday- Back
Wednesday- Shoulders
Thursday- Legs....but probably not
Friday-Arms
Saturday-.....uhh more chest?
Sunday- Rest
Is this how you usually workout? Do you know how much weight you lifted on each exercise last week? Did you track it? Do you plan deload weeks? Are you addressing your weaknesses?
There are so many variables that most people (especially beginners) don't even know about that will hinder their results. People with GREAT physiques optimize their progress by constantly having a very specific workout program based on one goal.
You probably won't have a GREAT physique because you don't care enough to either create a smart training program for yourself, or hire a trainer to do it for you.
People with GREAT physiques leave nothing to chance. Their workout programs are optimized to make them look their best and they stick with the plan for months/years on end.
4. The people you think have a GREAT physique probably do steroids
If you're reading this, I'm guessing you have been on Instagram before and likely follow a few fitness influencers. They have you convinced that everyone but you is a jacked bodybuilder than can achieve incredible physical feats.
The only problem is, it's all a lie.
These top notch physical specimens are a small percentage of people on earth, but since you follow a lot of them, your news feed makes it appear that everyone in the fitness world is like this. That's just wrong. It's just everyone YOU follow is like this.
Another big issue that most beginners don't even know is how rampant steroid use is when you get to the guys with the best physiques in the world. I'd be willing to say the majority of bodybuilders that most guys idolize use or have used performance enhancing drugs. It doesn't make them a bad person for doing so, but it's just the truth.
So when you, the average person, compares your normal beginner body to someone who is enhanced and has been working out for years, you'll NEVER measure up to that person's great physique. The answer isn't for you to start taking steroids. The answer is for you to change your perspective and realize what is an achievable aesthetic for you personally, especially in a realistic time-frame.
If you think you look better this year compared to last year, you're doing a great job. Comparing yourself to someone else will only cloud your vision to how well you're doing.
At the end of the day, what I want you to take from this blog post is that you can 100% improve the way your body looks. You don't need to look like a professional bodybuilder to be happy, because it won't happen anyway (so stop using that as the bar for happiness). You can boost your confidence by even just looking a LITTLE better or being a LITTLE stronger. A good physique is fully achievable within just a few months without needing to revolve your whole life around fitness.
